Echocardiogram:
Updated July 22, 2009

What is an Echocardiogram?

An Echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart. This lets the doctor and technologist see the size, shape, and movement of the heart, heart tissues, heart valves, heart abnormalities, and blood flow.

Why is this test done?

This test may be needed if you have experienced:

  • heart murmur
  • heart attack
  • chest pains
  • congenital heart defect

What can I expect during my Echocardiogram (Echo)?

There is no preparation to do before your echocardiogram.

You will be asked to remove your clothing from the waist up and will be given a hospital gown to wear.

The technologist will take you to an ultrasound room, and will then review your medical history and explain the procedure to you.

(Echocardiogram room at Yarmouth Regional Hospital)

This is a good time to ask any questions you may have.

You will then be asked to lie down on your left side. During the test you may be asked to move on to your back or your side.

Electrodes (sticky patches) are attached on the chest area to record your heart activity.

A gel will be put on your chest and a hand-held device (echo transducer/probe) will be pressed firmly onto your chest so the technologist and the doctor will be able to see your heart better.

You may also be asked to breathe slowly or to hold your breath to get better images.

Many pictures will be taken throughout the scan.

Once the scan is completed, the gel can easily be wiped off your chest.

No radiation is used for this test.

How long will my Echocardiogram take?

The scan will take approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour

The technologists are unable to give test results. Your doctor will receive a copy of the report within approximately 1 week. If you have any questions, concerns or if you are unable to keep your appointment, please do not hesitate to call the booking office at 742-2571 or toll free 1-877-742-2571.
